A Wichita woman went to Kansas Lottery headquarters Monday to claim the prize of a lifetime - $500,000 cash! Sandra Vines, 45, was the grand prize winner in the Midwest Millions drawing held January 9, 2009 in Topeka.
"I was supposed to start a new job today at Via Christi Hope," Vines said. "But when I explained the situation, they were happy to let me start tomorrow." In addition to starting a new job, Vines is also a student at Baker University, plus she is the mother of five children, four of them still at home.
Vines brought some very important people with her when she claimed her ticket: her mother, her best friend of 35 years, and her longtime boyfriend. They all told the same story about Vines - that she is an incredibly lucky person.
In separate radio promotions, Vines won $7,000 and a Jet Ski. In a cable television drawing, she won a television and a Play Station. She's also quite lucky with a variety of lottery games.
"They call me the Keno Queen," laughed Vines. "I also love Kansas Hold'Em."
"And she always wins on her little 'scratchies,'" said Vines' best friend Sheryl Davis.
Vines said she sent in four or five entries for the Midwest Millions drawing. The entries had to be non-winning $10 Midwest Millions tickets, which were pretty hard for Vines to come by.
"She kept getting winning tickets, and she wasn't very happy about that. She wanted non-winning tickets to send in for the drawing," said Davis.
"I just felt like I was going to win the drawing," said Vines. "What can I say?"
Midwest Millions is a game offered jointly by the Kansas and Iowa lotteries. This is the second Midwest Millions game the two lotteries have developed together. There were approximately 69,000 entries from both states for the January 9 drawing.
In addition to the $500,000 won by Sandra Vines, five other players each won a $10,000 cash prize:
$10,000 Jim Gardner of Ottumwa, Iowa
$10,000 Dave Von Sprecken of Swisher, Iowa
$10,000 Steve Dillon of Hutchinson, Kansas
$10,000 Eric Corrill of Council Bluffs, Iowa
$10,000 Roma Wisdom of Eudora, Kansas
