Cessna To Reduce Workforce By 2,000
|
|
Monday, January 12, 2009
Cessna plans to reduce its workforce by 2,000 positions, the company announced Monday. Cessna said the reductions will affect all pay categories.
In a statement sent to employees, Cessna VP Jim Walters said voluntary layoffs will be offered. Sixty-day WARN notices are expected to go out in the next few weeks. Layoffs would take effect in March.
Cessna CEO Jack Pelton told employees last week that production rates would be changed due to the deepening economic crisis.
The layoffs are on top of 500 job cuts Cessna announced last fall.
Cessna is Wichita's biggest employer, with 12,000 employees. The
company also has 1,300 people working at its Independence facility.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
Fellow Cessnans,
In a recent communication Jack discussed additional reductions in our 2009 production schedule and subsequent workforce reductions. As a result of these adjustments, further workforce reductions of approximately 2,000 employees will be implemented across Cessna. These reductions will affect all pay categories.
We will again offer the Voluntary Layoff Program (VLP) for employees at all Cessna facilities. Details regarding this program will be communicated in a separate memo.
Employees identified for layoff will receive a 60-day notice in accordance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN). These notices will be issued within the next few weeks and separations will occur in March, 2009. Further information and next steps will be communicated to affected employees and their supervisors within the coming weeks.
These actions are regrettable, but necessary to ensure our long-term stability and success. As always, we remain committed to keep you informed of the processes and next steps as we work through this difficult time.
