The fire was reported just after noon Sunday in the 600 block of SE 5th Street in Newton.
Fire crews arriving on the scene reported the home was fully engulfed in flames. It took crews about an hour to put the fire out.
A fire spokesperson on the scene says the residents of the home were not there at the time.
The family cat however did die in the fire.
