A former volunteer firefighter in Mulvane has been charged with one count of arson in connection to a fire at his parents' home back in October.

21 year-old William A. Phillips appeared in Sedgwick County District Court Thursday morning. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for January 6th.

Phillips allegedly set fire to his parents home on Miller Street on a Sunday morning before they went to church. Investigators say the fire started in the basement and quickly spread to the roof vents and chimney.

Phillips was taken into custody for questioning and eventually confessed to setting the blaze. Damage to the home and contents was valued at more than $100,000.
