Saturday's strong south winds caused serious problems for firefighters in Southeast Kansas, as they battled a grass fire along Highway 99 north of Sedan.

The fire broke out near Quivera Rd., according to authorities and took more than four hours to get under control.

It's not known how many acres of pasture land burned, but we're told no structures were damaged and nobody was injured.

Firefighters from Sedan, Chautaqua County, Peru, Cedar Vale, Belknap, Elk County, and Dexter helped out. The blaze was finally reported under control by 4:15 Saturday afternoon.

The National Weather Service reported that high winds downed power lines and utility poles in Parsons, causing power outages across the area.

Power outages were also reported in Columbus and siding was blown off several homes. The Labette County Emergency Manager measured wind gusts in excess of 60 miles-per-hour. Large playground equipment was also blown over.
