A Wichita man has made his first appearance in court for allegedly operating a pit bull dog fighting operation in Kay County, Oklahoma. Meanwhile, more puppies were found late Wednesday, bringing the total number of dogs found to 106.
Jerry Southern, 32, is being held in the Kay County Jail on 106 counts of animal cruelty and possession of dogs for fighting purposes. He is being held on a $250,000 cash bond. Undersheriff Steve Kelley also says dog fighting equipment was found on the rural property.
One puppy died in Kelley's arms Wednesday as they went inside the home after obtaining a search warrant Wednesday.
"He was curled up in a bowl and couldn't even lift his head," said Kelley. "The dogs we found inside were in small cages with about 6 inches of feces."
Meanwhile, an investigator from the Oklahoma Veterinary Board will be at the property Friday to help determine what to do next.
"We simply don't have a facility available to house this many dogs," he said.
Among other evidence, Kelley says a contraption was found on the property that straps two dogs heads together in close proximity to each other to teach them aggression.
"It was obvious that fighting had been taking place," he said. "Some of these dogs had their noses ripped off, ears torn in half, and gouges in their skin."
Southern made his first appearance in Kay County District Court Thursday morning where he heard the charges against him. Kelley says his next court appearance will be on December 17, when Southern could enter a plea.
