Wichita police are searching for clues, after a shocking discovery at a normally quiet apartment complex.

A woman was found decapitated in a vacant apartment at the Newport Apartment complex near Central and Ridge.

Police still do not know the woman's identity. They believe she was in her 30's. They also believe she lived in an apartment in the same area.

Police were called after a neighbor smelled smoke coming from a vacant apartment.

They found the body inside the building, in the vacant apartment on the ground floor.

Officers are going door to door talking with neighbors, asking if they've seen or heard anything out of the ordinary.

They're stopping and searching every car going in and out of the complex.

They've searched every dumpster, and canvassed the entire area by foot, helicopter, on horseback and with dogs. Divers even searched the nearby water for any clues.

Wichita Police Lieutenant Ken Landwehr says, "We've had several reports of neighbors that heard certain things throughout the night, unknown if they are related or not. I don't want to comment specifically on each one, but a lot of people that have been interviewed have heard things. Again, I don't know until we can get a time frame on the death."

If the victim is the woman they think it is, she was last seen around 9 p.m. Monday night.

Police believe the woman was killed in the vacant apartment. They also found signs in the apartment that a fire was started.

Police are still searching for the weapon, and they still do not have a suspect.
