Boeing sent out its first WARN notices today, as part of announced layoffs of 800 workers.

70 Wichita workers received their notices today. Their final day of work will be January 23, 2009/

Boeing has blamed the layoffs at its Integrated Defense Systems facility in Wichita on the delay of a U.S. Air Force tanker replacement program and the end of other work projects.

The cuts come at a time when local business jet manufacturers are already struggling with the global financial credit crisis.

Hawker Beechcraft announced earlier this month it plans to lay off nearly 500 people, with Cessna just days later also saying it was laying off 500 workers in Wichita.

Alan you talk about all the 'horrible' comments made about aircraft workers. You need to look at yourself in the mirror, you have made 'horrible' comments by degrading people.

Watching all of the posts I had to throw my two cents in. Union buster are a piece of work turning away people because they are former workers. You have no heart and one day all the things you say and do will come back and bite you someday. Will you turn me away because I'm employed with the Air force? No you would not, because you know they are skilled workers. So you turn away someone who has the right to be a union member and aircraft worker. Well thats fine your call. Remember all of that when you decide to fly on a plane and the people who can't get there child a toy or buy the ham for christmas built that plane to take your ungratefull heartless rump to the place you are going. I pray for you and hope you open your eyes and heart.

To Union Buster - we know who you are and we are watching - oh yes - we ARE watching. 8)

To Salina Lawyer, shoot I did'nt think we would have anyone lower than a union worker here but here you are. a) you do not know who I am. b) I have been around long enough to understand the game. c) Do you know when a lawyer is lying? Their lips will move! Ha

Say it with me - SPELL CHECK!!! I couldn't understand a dang thing you were trying to say..

Posted by: Alan Location: Wichita on Nov 25, 2008 at 12:03 PM
Unemployment for me would be $424.00 per week. Without aircraft workers donating to charity, (food bank, operation holiday etc.), charity will be hard hit, then these VERY people putting down aircraft workers will have there hand out asking for the donations/handouts we give! Go ahead, bite the hand that feeds many and puts toys under the tree for you ingrates, and after all the horrible comments made about the aircraft workers, I hope they ALL stop giving, you do not deserve our help!! I know after this, I will no longer participate in "adopt a family for Christmas"!!! EVER!

To Union Buster! Discrimination is against the law. I will be keeping records and will be looking for individuals who you turn away because they are former aircraft workers.

Posted by: jeri Location: kansas on Nov 25, 2008 at 05:23 AM
to alan:why would you say that you can make more on unemployment,i dont see how when we only get a check once a week for 76$ well i know my house payment is far more then that.it is sad yes people are talking about things they know nothing.and also most of the workers are the ones who usaly give to holiday funds for others who can not aford thanksgiving and christmass. bu this year who is going to help the ones who have helped.hmmm

Posted by: union buster Location: wichita on Nov 24, 2008 at 02:07 PM
Oh by the way alan I am in a position to hire. Anyone whose last job was with an aircraft plant will not get a job here, I've already turned away three. ;-)

Posted by: union buster Location: wichita on Nov 24, 2008 at 02:04 PM
Must have hit a nerve alan? I say again after seeing the footage of the strikers on the line (you name the plant) you have no room to talk. Can't clean toilets, dig ditches... I'm in management and have union flunkies like you do these jobs, any monkey can be trained to do the jobs the mouth breathing union thugs do ah put rivet in hole pop, ah put rivit in hole pop, put rivit in hole pop, who hoo pay day!

you all are stupid people are losing their jobs

Posted by: Alan Location: Wichita on Nov 24, 2008 at 12:40 PM
Why don't you imbecile hamburger frying non-union morons go crawl back to your roach infested one room apartments and cry in your beer there? We at Spirit and Boeing can make more on unemployment than you uneducated half wits make working full time at your non-union minimum wage dead end unskilled jobs. “Boo hoo hoo, I don't make half the money you union people make, and can't feed all my illegitimate brats, boo hoo hoo”! Might think about doing something you are qualified to do, go walk south Broadway or dig some ditches, clean some public toilets. LOL!!

Came from management from a transportation company, teamsters were able to unionize the company "nationwide". Kansas employees voted against it but had to comply. Within 5 years company filed for bankruptcy. Lots of folks hurt cause union would not allow givebacks. Now what good was the union? NONE! Unions had their time in the sun, now it is gone, along with the Steel industry, closly followed by the Auto industry (unless we are forced to bail them out too). Aircraft industry will be after that. I do not know what you rabid union sheeple think you are doing, you will be the death of the aircraft industry yet. Wait & see.

Posted by: JD Location: Wichita on Nov 24, 2008 at 05:59 AM
To mr"unions", we dont need to know anything about it, we see how their foolish decisions affect everybody, so keep paying you union dues and keep getting laid off. Sounds like a winning plan to me. So mr unions what are you going to do when you get a pink slip....say.....awww the union is so bad, hopefully i can pay my bills with my unemployment that the union helped me get.......the union needs to be gone and get over their entirely too big of heads.....whiners

Posted by: unions Location: Wichita on Nov 23, 2008 at 09:47 PM
People that are not in unions have no clue. Just run their mouths about something they know nothing about.

I am a single dad and during the strike one of the issues was job security for 4years, standing out on the picket line with your kids wanting everyone to feel sorry for you, someone that make $35.00 per hr. to screw a screw or drive a rivet my parents work there and I don't support them for what they do nobody else in the city can choose to strangle there bosses in to making more money or better benifits be happy you have them I can't afford to have the deduction from my poor little $10.00 an hour check for insurance for over 8 years, try living in someone elses shoes before you want them to be sorry, you can not survive with making $3,000.00 every two weeks, try it on $600.00 be happy with what you got if I ran the company and the union pulled this crap all the time like they do I would replaced the whole union army it's not 1945 any more I think it is time to abollish all the unions mech., plumbers, pipe fitters and and so on rely on people as people with skills thats all people.

Posted by: Shelly Location: Wichita on Nov 23, 2008 at 06:08 AM
this is not a surprise to most people in wichita. every year they do this, then they hire alot of people then lay off again.

Posted by: carroll Location: wichita on Nov 22, 2008 at 07:53 PM
AMEN

Posted by: n Location: wichita on Nov 22, 2008 at 07:12 AM
must be nice to earn 4 times more than anyone else, thanks for giving us that information, didn't get that job security though did ya, shame, greed pure and simple, what goes around, comes around and you people that were on the picket lines being greedy and waiting for more well I guess God had your last laugh, God giveth and God taketh away, lolololololol!!!!

Posted by: carroll on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:41 PM
where do you all get this greed fixation? no one has been laid off as the result of greed. contracts are met or expire. it's buisness. you can't continue to pay people when there is nothing for them to do. would you pay me to sit on your couch, and watch tv? i seriously doubt it. i know many are nervous, up set, and po'd. wichita is aircraft- period. from myself in facilities. to contract shops. to the gal at sonic. i may earn 4 times her wage, but i rely on her and she on me. we all rely on one another in this economy. i work at spirit. i can roll into any shop, and don't have any problems. even when i have to tell a manager- well, dude/mame- you're screwed. you're down. it's not a personal issue. if you have personal issues with persons in management. that's your problem. to say all of management sux is only a reflection of personal perspective, and is neither fair or true to make it as an aspect of any company's public perception.

Posted by: gone4good Location: wichita on Nov 21, 2008 at 05:52 PM
Sorry to hear about the layoffs, BUT don't go to Spirit unless you want to be harrased by female managers that are power crazy and go balistic on you if they don't like you.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 21, 2008 at 05:24 PM
thats what they get... To anyone that says go to Spirit. well it will happen to them soon. wait an see.

Posted by: N on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:19 AM
They do this very year. They just had a big raise - maybe they should have not been so greedy. If you want to make the big money own the company-You know they are going they have lay offs- Start a savings account. You guys make a lot more then the most of us.

Posted by: JD Location: Wichita on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:17 AM
Good thats what the greed people who were striking get.....no you know how the rest of the small machine shop people feel when they got laid off because of your foolish greed!!!!!!!!!

Man Injured In Fireworks Accident Has Hand Amputated
  • Posted By: RonI read the comments and one thing comes to mind. During the 4th of July celebrations, what do they give the smallest kids? A SPARKLER! The bigger kids shoot off the larger more dangerous stuff. Maybe they should ban sparklers!
  • Posted By: AnnMy children spend every summer in MO where it is totally legal to shoot off fireworks. Sunday, I asked them if they thought that sparklers were dangerous. Before the oldest could say anything, my 10 year old said that they were. I then asked would it be dangerous to put two sparklers together, again the 10 year old said that would be very dangerous. I then asked them what they thought would happen if 20 sparklers were taped together, the 10 year old told me that that would be a bomb. They had not heard about this story until I told them because they were out of state. If a 10 year old could figure it out, why couldn't somebody who was in his 40's? Also, does this mean that anybody that wants to celebrate a milestone is allowed to shoot of fireworks or make bombs not matter what time of the year it is? I am sure many people are celebrating the fact they may have lived another year without cancer or something.
  • Posted By: WilliamCant we all just get along, get in here and gimmie a hug, wrap your little nub around me and help hug it out...
  • Posted By: Jamiethis to scott the : fyi bill is the guy who says "here's you sign."
  • Posted By: AmyI thought that any grown person who would think that lighting 50 sparklers tied together was a GREAT idea must be drunk... then I saw where it said that he had just attended an AA meeting!!
  • Posted By: fredfor all you dorks who are sayin does he not know when he can do fire works.... look taking 50 sparklers and tieing them together make a bomb, not a fire cracker. he should be in jail spakler bombs are never legel
  • Posted By: scottto jamie bill don't say Here's your sign, thats some other guy. and to all who don't know what he was doing. its a sparkler bomb. its lots of sparklers tied together real tight, the fuse is a sparkler that you would leave sticking up farther then the rest. i don't know what he did to lose a finger, but anyone knos you run after lighting one of those. its BOMB, not no little fire cracker. don't people go to jail for making bombs? why is this so different? that could of killed someone. charges should be files for making a IED improvised explosive device. so let me get this straight, if i make a bomb, set it off, blow my hand off, i won't get in trouble? whats this say about our law. what this guy did was not safe, it could of killed. oh, have i said, its illegle to make bombs. someone should do something about this. i am a recovering drug addict, you think i would get away with something like this, heck no. i guess when i get caught blowing off sparkler bombs, it will be ok
  • Posted By: frankI understand the man had to have his hand amputated. Some people will say anything as long as it's anonymous. This man isn't the only one with lapses of judgment.
  • Posted By: nunyaYou people should be ashamed of yourselves! Yeah people have lapses of judgement from time to time and do stupid things, but that doesnt mean this man would have been better off catching himself on fire and suffering more than he did! I am sure YOU have all done stupid things in your life too, it just hasn't caught up to you yet!
  • Posted By: JamieOk i'm going to tie 50 sparklers and light them all at one time and see what happens to me! But first I have to go to my Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. No commen sence. This is what Bill would say "Here's your sign."
  • Posted By: ConcernedWow, so much for Anonymous. I can't believe the SGT went that far. That's incredibly unethical. Sure they could have mentioned that it happened in that parking lot, and yes the man is lacking common sense, but it should not have been a clear attempt at defamation. It is nobody's business what his personal issues are. The point of the story should have been that he wasn't thinking and made a mistake that cost him his hand.
  • Posted By: DebFunny? Laughing? How sick! This man is hurting and his family and friends are hurting also. How sad this is. Praying for healing of his surgery.
  • Posted By: AnonymousAmy: just because you attend an AA meeting or any support group DOES NOT mean you are always DRINKING...its a RECOVERY group that you attend FOR A LIFETIME TO HELP MAINTAIN SOBER! so for all you know, he could be sober for 10 years and still blew his hand off. way to be judgemental Amy
  • Posted By: AmyHow odd that he would have just attended an AA meeting... my first thought is that he must have been drunk. I feel sorry for the poor guy, but at the same time what did he really expect? You are 44 years old, not 17!
  • Posted By: SadI heard this that day on my scanner.. I was praying so hard that this wasn't a child...I'm sorry that this guy was hurt. This could happen to any one ...If you are around Hutch on the night of the fourth of July , then you would think this could happen a lot more then it does, with all the fireworks going off all over the place...
  • Posted By: nonyahe knew they would explode when he tied all the sparklers together!! Idiot... a spoon is dangerous if you jam it in your eye. You can't blame the sparkler... it's just natural selection.
  • Posted By: LOLStupid is what Stupid does!! I hope the tax payers didn't have to cover any of his bill, and he better not get disability for doing stupid stuff.
  • Posted By: QuigleyTwo quotes come to mind. 1 Ron White:"You can't fix stupid!" 2 Bill Engval:"Here's your sign!" What on earth was he thinking, or not?!
  • Posted By: tomI agree that accidents do happen but, when a 44 yr old man bundles 50 together and puts a fuse in the middle of it and holds it in his hand as he lights the fuse. Come on people, I see a lot of red flags that would stop me from doing it. It sounds like somebody with alcohol or drugs in thier system and wanting to show off for his friends.Sounds like something from the "Jackass" movie.
  • Posted By: AJFirst of all, from my understanding, he blew off 2 fingers, not his whole hand. But of course, it's not funny anytime someone gets hurt. JJ is right, explosives are dangerous no matter what. My husband is an explosives technician and he has to keep updated on trainings to be able to do his job, and even then accidents still happen. It does sound as though this man was an amateur who was trying to have a good time. He should have been a lot more cautious when dealing with explosives, especially home-made ones.
  • Posted By: AnonymousSeriously u people think this is funny? A man blew his hand off and its funny??? I just dont understand our world these days. And those of you who say "should have finished the job off" or "to bad he didnt catch himself on fire" What the Hell!? Seriously!? Your thinking he deserved more than losing a hand? I pray that nothing like this happens to anyone that you know, maybe if it did you wouldnt be laughing. Have you never used fireworks? Accidents happen.
  • Posted By: JJThis takes dangerous to a whole differant level. However; one of my kids got thier hand burned so bad by ONE SINGLE SPARKLER that his skin was fused together. Needless to say fireworks are dangerous no matter what the situation is. All the caution in the world would not have helped my son. A bad product is a bad product. This guy should have used a little more sense.
  • Posted By: Jenna JOk, I might be going to hell for this, but I can't stop laughing.
  • Posted By: Honestly people.....how cruel can you be?? So, he was having a little fun, got carried away, and is now hurt. But do you all have to make fun of him like this. Shame on you!!!
  • Posted By: From the sound of the story he made a sparkler bomb which exploded in his hand.
  • Posted By: I can't believe how cruel you people are. I'm sure he wouldn't have done if he thought it was going to hurt anyone. Remember what you mother said or should have said-if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all!
  • Posted By: AnonymousHe obviously needs to learn about the rules of when & where fireworks are legal.
  • Posted By: Oh my! I just nearly spit coffee through my nose, this is so funny.
  • Posted By: I bet anything the national news syndicates will pick this up and he'll become a target of jokes on late night talk shows everywhere... Why do so many people from Hutch come off as backward, rednecked, and incompetent to be living amongst the rest of us?
  • Posted By: MimiGlad he's alive, but ... how darn dumb can you be??????
  • Posted By: Darn. Sounds like we almost had a Darwin Award winner. Too bad he couldn't have finished the job.
  • Posted By: Thats whats happens when you quit drinking
  • Posted By: gto bad he didn't catch himself on fire, that's how stupid he is.
