The Kansas Board of Regents is discussing how state budget cuts could impact higher education.
State budget director Duane Goossen told regents Wednesday that universities in Kansas have built up reserves and can cover losses for a while. But he warned regents that the surpluses will dry up by the end of the current fiscal year.
State officials still must factor gambling revenue into its calculations, but those funds aren't expected to make up the shortfall. The state is seeking a 3 percent cut this fiscal year. After that, the state will ask for an additional 4 percent cut next fiscal year.
Regent Christine Downey-Schmidt said the board should make it clear to the Legislature that money that already had been allocated to higher education was important.
