A 33-year-old man is dead after he was gunned down overnight at a West Wichita motel. Police say it was not a random act.

Wichita Police Lt. Sam Hanley said guests and workers heard some gunshots at the Stratford House Inn at about 11:30 p.m. in the 5500 Blk. of W. Kellogg.

When police arrived, they found the victim, Edward "Brian" Leeper, unconscious in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to his chest. He died about 30 minutes later on the way to a Wichita hospital. Leeper was reportedly from the Wichita area.

Police said he was shot as he walked across the parking lot.

Hanley said investigators discovered a bullet hole in the room next to the victim's, but could not find any sign of a struggle inside the victim's own room. Evidence was also found in the parking lot of Sam's Place, a bar next to the motel.

Police are searching for a suspect driving a white vehicle with a loud muffler. No further description is yet available.
