Friday's windy day provided a perfect test for the Wind for Schools program, which places wind turbines in schools for practical and educational purposes.

The Ell-Saline High School in Brookville is taking advantage of the wind and harnessing electricity.

Once Westar's Green Team erects the tower and gets the turbine working, the Brookville High School will get another source of power, as well as a teaching tool.

The tower is a 1.8 kilowatt wind turbine and is part of Kansas State University's Kansas Wind for Schools program. Five rural Kansas schools were selected to receive a small wind turbine for educational and outreach purposes.

To be selected, the school agreed to incorporate wind energy into their
science curriculum. The turbine at Ell-Saline High School will help supply
electricity to the school's greenhouse.
