Investigators are looking into the second railroad incident near Matfield Green in nine days.

Two freight trains collided near Matfield Green at 2:45 a.m. Saturday, forcing four engines and five cars off the tracks and causing minor injuries.

Residents in the area were also evacuated for about five hours after the accident as a precaution.

A train carrying truck trailers hit the back of another freight train that was trying to get onto a side track to let the first train pass.

The eastbound train had been traveling from Los Angeles to New York City and the westbound train was en route from suburban Chicago to the Dallas area

Steve Forsberg is a spokesman for Burlington Northern Santa Fe. He says the westbound train had not pulled completely off the main track when it was struck.

Crewmembers in the eastbound train were being treated for minor injuries at an Emporia hospital. No other injuries were reported from the accident, about 40 miles northeast of Wichita.

Other trains were being rerouted through North Dakota and Newton, Kansas.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe officials have blamed severe wind gusts a derailment last Thursday. Thirty-nine cars were forced off the track in that incident, including one that leaked the dangerous chemical sulfur dioxide.
