Daycare Dilemma

Stay up-to-date with KAKE News:

Finding the right daycare for your child can be one of the most difficult decisions a new parent makes. We have all heard horror stories about daycare providers neglecting or abusing children.

Joe Lang checked out several day cares before he picked one for his son Jacob. Lang says, "Making sure you have the right person to take care of your kid is a scary business."

Childcare and licensing supervisor Shirley O'Dell says parents cannot be too careful. O'Dell says, "If you don't see things that meet your standards you need to voice your opinion."

Odell says you should always do these things before deciding on a daycare provider:

  • Tour the center and look through the entire house, inside and out.
  • Drop in for a visit without notice.
  • Make sure the provider is licensed. Licensed day cares are inspected once a year by the state.
  • Always follow your gut instinct. If something doesn't feel right it probably isn't.

    Here are some red flags:

  • Uncleanness.
  • Smoking allowed in the house.
  • No open door policy, you should have access to a daycare as long your child is in their care.

If you would like to find out if there have been any complaints against a specific daycare provider, call the Kansas Childcare, Licensing and Regulations Department at 785-296-1270.
