A popular procedure gets rid of varicose veins and helps relieve the pain of other vein diseases without a hospital stay.

At just 20 years-old, Shannon So is already suffering from a vein disease called venous insufficiency, or valve reflux. It can cause varicose veins down the road.

"My valve doesn't close completely and so blood pools in my feet and I've also had problems with passing out due to this," said So.

For So, it's genetics. Her mother, grandmother, aunts and uncles all have the disease.

But now a popular, somewhat new surgery is putting an end to their pain.

"The venous closure procedure eliminates the risks of anesthesia," explains Doctor Stephanie Oberhelman. "It eliminates the pain and discomfort that patients experience prior to this technology."

Shannon is undergoing the 30 minute procedure. She is fully alert and awake. The doctor puts a catheter in the bad vein, fills it with fluid and shuts it down. Shannon walks out of the surgery room a few minutes later with little or no pain.

The procedure is available at several offices in Wichita.
