If you let your children walk to and from school, or anywhere else, you might be inadvertently putting them at risk.

Being hit by a car is the third leading cause of death for kids age 5 to 14. One group is trying to keep Wichita's kids safe.

The Wichita Area SAFE KIDS Coalition says trends in road design have make traveling easier for motorists, but at the same time created potentially hazardous walking environments for children.

As part of the SAFE Kids Walk This Way program, they'll l begin an assessment of the walking conditions in Wichita and identify hazardous conditions.

The group is also inviting the community to conduct walkability checks while walking in their neighborhood. Walkability Checklists are available online at www.viachristi.org, with Wichita Clinic WalkFest registration packets, at any Davis Moore dealership or by calling 689-5700.

In the next few months, SAFE KIDS' pedestrian safety task force will compile the results of the walkability checklists submitted and work to improve walking conditions and make long-term environmental changes that will create safer streets friendly for pedestrians and drivers.
