Age Discrimination

At the Total station near 13th and McLean, its not the price of gas that fuels complaints, it's the way you have to pay. Some people have to prepay, others don't. The difference is based on your age. The sign says if you're under 35, you have to go inside and pay before you pump. Store workers say the policy is meant to cut down the number of people driving off without paying. Some customers are outraged at the station's policy.

The station's manager says he put the sign up because younger people are trouble. He says the sign was meant to apply to 25-year-olds and younger, writing 35 was a mistake.

While age policies can end up costing businesses revenue, they are not illegal. Wichita police say these policies might even help reduce crime. Police say the number of gas drive offs fluctuates greatly with gas prices, and the number of drive offs has been up in the past couple of months.
