Two men are dead after an ultralight plane crashed in Saline County Saturday morning.

The plane crashed around 9:15 in a pasture area about 15 miles northwest of Salina.

A man who lives near the field says he saw the plane flying with no apparent problems shortly before the crash. He said he heard a sputtering noise after the plane passed his house and then he heard a thud.

The man said he saw a cloud of smoke after the plane hit the east side of a pond.

Saline County Sheriff Glen Kochanowski says the two men apparently died upon impact.

The victims are 64-year-old Terrance Thornton of Culver, and 60-year-old Jerry Holsinger, of Petersburg, Virginia.
