June 18 - A local man accused of killing a Harvey County Sheriff's deputy is preparing to go to trial. Gregory Moore faces capital murder charges for the shooting death of Deputy Kurt Ford. The trial will start in Sedgwick County this week, a year and a half after Ford's death.
Just after midnight on April 9th, 2005, Harvey County deputies responded to a domestic violence call. Deputies say Moore was holding his girlfriend hostage inside his house. After negotiations failed deputies moved and tried to arrest Moore.
Ford, a husband and father of two young children, was shot and killed. Hesston Officer Chris Eilert was also injured. Moore was arrested and charged with capital murder among other charges.
Moore's trial is set to start this week. The trial has been moved out of Harvey County and will take place in Judge Kennedy's courtroom at the Sedgwick County Courthouse. Hundreds of jury summons have been sent out, with jury selection beginning on Monday.
Jury selection is expected to take a few days. Opening statements are expected by the end of the week.
