There is a benefit this weekend at the new community center for a deserving family, The Tutwilers and others. They have been helped enough so why give them more? They are both able to work so should be set for life as it is. How much of that money this weekend is going to the people in need throughout the community? I would like to read about in next thursdays paper how much and who got what. Doug Thompson , Attorney will be selling his DVD behind the scenes at 225 ALCO stores the day the "Extreme home makeover" Rebuild Chapman aires Jan 25. Are members of the community who were devastated by the tornado going to benefit from the sales? Does anyone know, where the proceeds go? Still no one has answered my question or anyones elses question on any of the comment pages as to if Crystal Tutwiler is really battling cancer. Is she??? God Bless Crystal Bishop

God bless this family and all the families with thier personal losses, both physical and material. We serve a Mighty God, and He will always bless those who bless others. I know that the volunteers who helped build this home despite thier own loss, will be blessed beyond measure in ways you can't measure by the worlds standards...We all lost something in this tragedy, and not just this one incident but every day of our lives we live with pain and suffering. But if we focus on others needs instead of our own, we will always feel so much better about our own needs. When I start feeling sorry for myself, I am not getting enough "pity",I think of those like this young man, who put on a uniform, went in to harms way,so that others can sit home and whine about what they did or didn't get. You recieve in direct proportion to what you give. What have you given to God and country lately? I am blessed beyond measure for having known one young woman in Chapman who is no longer with us. And her family

Chapman has been the hometown of my parents and grandparents, and I have been saddened by the lack of rebuilding. After visiting my 88 yr old mother Friday, and seeing hundreds of volunteers working together to rebuild a home for a well deserving military family, I saw hope for the town again. The Extreme Team are also working on another home belonging to Pat Irvine (Chapman local), building a community center, and rebuilding the city park. God Bless the Extreme Team and all of those who have volunteered!!! PS; To Ron from Milford, you are right there is no better feeling then helping others, some talk the talk but you are walking the walk!

My thoughts and prayers have been with the family of "Crystal Bishop" Someone should be doing something for them so the child can have a stable home. Donations are being taken for the Tutwiler family. I'm curious and as to how much they will get. They surely will be set for life and both parents are able to work with benefits. Sorry but your daughter wasn't killed in the war. According to Extreme home makeover those are the deserving one. Too bad huh? This was never about any of our tornado victims in the community but about the Tutwiler family. They wrote in to the show before the tornado hit. Does anyone know who the other 4 families are????????? Is Crystal tutwiler really struggling with cancer. They'll receive new cars, college funds and cash and be set for life and believe me the donations will be a lot. Someone could have done that for your grandchild and the father by donated a piece of property and build them a small home. God bless you and your family.

WOW! You people amaze me. I spent the last week working 14-16 hour days on the projects in Chapman, It was the best thing I have ever done! To work side by side with people who were there only to support the community, no personal gain involved. Knowing that you are part of something bigger than yourself! I spent the majority of the time on the Tutwieler house but also helped with the community center and another house on the main street. The community as a whole is better off since ABC came to town. I only wish that we would have a better set up for organizing the volunteer labor. If you didn't just jump in and start doing then you would have stood around all day. Some did just that. The volunteer force was competent and committed to getting it done but the organizing bodies were lacking when it came done to who did what and at what time. Not complaining, just could have done more in less time with the numbers of folks wearing blue. Can't wait for next Habitat for Humanity projects.

I dont feel that they should help just the one family, there are MANY devistated homes and families that could use the help. They should have distributed there time and donations to the entire community, not just to the one family. We went today for the first time, and this changed our outlook on things. Extreme Make Over should be doing more for MANY families not just ONE HOUSE.. This is so wrong and my heart goes out to everyone in Chapman, wish that the home edition would have thought about other families as well, and the military should be taking care of their people and letting the other families get the donations from Extreme Home Makeover. I think that the the family that lost their momma and future wife should have gotten the most, you have a single father that needs the help more than a military family does at this time. I FEEL THAT OTHERS NEEDED THE HELP MORE THAT THE FAMILY THAT IS GETTING IT, ESCPECIALLY THE SINGLE DAD AND KIDDO'S.

Ok people, get over it. So what if Ty doesn't build the secret room. BE REAL, they don't do this show because they wanted to help people. They would be in the peace corps. IT IS ABOUT MONEY. They make lot's of money with sub stories and good endings. But honestly, ask yourself...does it matter? They make money and some lucky family get's the help they need. One hand that washes the other ;) right? I would not care what the persons name is that helps me fix my house nevertheless build me a house. I would be humble and greatful. Now with that said. I need some help fixing a few things on my house. Husband is in the military and been gone off and on for the last 5 years, got three kids and i can't do it on my own. Now with that said, how many of you would volunteer, without TV exposure??? I personaly can't wish for one person in Chapman as all went through something horrible. May all find some good samaritan to help them. God bless all of you Just my humble opinion...

To rosehill I think that you are pretty stupid to say that Ty Pennington doesn't build the secret room. If the man says he's going to build it then he goes ahead and does it. If you want to be stupid and uneducated then don't post that junk. Also to I Know have you ever heard of round the clock 24/7?

"Watch out">> To the Chapman Ks. family that is chosen for the home make-over, Extreme Makeover is a wolf in sheeps clothing<< they are not what they seem.Knowing a volunteer that was there from day one in Rosehill..was very disappointed in the Show's crew.. they do not do the work... Ty Penington is on site for the 1st and last day only... He does not build the secret room, chosen volunteers do<

I could not agree more with "I KNOW" you cranky people have nothing better to do than put a good thing down unless it is happening to you then its all fine and wonderful. Of you dont know what you are talking about how about keeping your opinions to yourself. And it was Rosehill not Andover. Know your facts before you go arguing with someone about it. Congradulations to Chapman and God Bless everyone who puts in the extra time and effort to help this lucky family. You are wonderful people for doing what you do to help another person in need out.

I am thankful that the show is willing to help the small community of Chapman. As a resident it is depressing driving through the once picturesque town that now feels like a wasteland. Morale is down and folks are moving out, I hope this helps get folks motivated again.

I live in Chapman and think that is an amazing opportunity for the town and the lucky family that gets the home. I also really hope that they can find a way to help the town out with their schools as well. At least in some way. All of the students, K-12, are currently in trailers. And I can understand why they aren't going to make 5 new houses, cause then why not 6, or 7, and so on. Congrats to Chapman!

I love all you geniuses get on here like you know what your talking about!! There was NEVER a house done in Andover, There has been exactly 0 houses sold since Season 1, There has been 1 house sent into foreclosure( because it was used as collateral on a business loan), The families bills after the show are never a total higher than they were before the show, The Knutch's did not own the land downtown they had a loan for the entire thing, to do 5 houses would mean 5 complete builders and crews which isn't feasable in 7 days or in most the areas, the houses aren't nearly as Extreme in size the past two seasons. Keep hating and being jealous but its a great show and changes WAY more lives than you see every Sunday!!! Congratulations Chapman

The Knutch family in Rose Hill had their house blown up from a propane leak while they were on a family vacation. The family of five then had a mortgage on a non-existent house and lived with the grandparents. They received a new house, a new auto repair shop, a new Ford truck, all the kids received scholarships, AND their mortgage was paid off. Even if their taxes went higher... don't you think they're in a better postion than before? In most cases, the houses that are built are custom-made to help a family member through a life-threatening condition. The homes are wheelchair accessable or have air filtration systems that make living at home a possibility. What kind of value and price tag can you apply to something like that? The show also features a community and reveals the heart and soul and character of that community. It displays how much the community cares for members of its own.

Our children live in Chapman, and they are very excited that Extreme Makeover is coming to their community. I believe this is the boost Chapman needs to get it growing again. Hopefully, the show will also do something for the lost of all their schools and churches. I love watching Extreme Makeover because they help so many people in need.

Its a good idea if the family deserves it. It is true, the cost of building 1 overly extravagant home could build 5 modest homes. Does anyone remember that the Andover family had a downtown Wichita building worth over $100,000 and still got a free home.

These homes are a blessing to those who need them & I appreciate that the sponsors want to do this for the families. But the homes are too elaborate. I agree, scale it down and build more homes to help more people out.

I want to know how many of these homes end up being sold because the recipients can't afford the property taxes? Do property taxes in the neighborhood go up? Also, how is it that a couple of these homes have ended up in foreclosure?
Posted by: Anonymous
on Oct 14, 2008 at 07:57 AM
the money would be better spent helpoing 5 families with homes they can afford than 1 big one that they cant afford to pay taxes on much less maintain. what is wrong with this world why dont they call the show extreme bankruptcy
Posted by: Anonymous
on Oct 14, 2008 at 03:49 AM
the original idea of the show was great, but now it has grown into building another building bigger and fancier than the last one. I just think that it would be far better to scale back on the bling and build a more practical building that they could afford. Maybe instead of one really fancy one they could instead build a couple of homes that would still be very nice.
Posted by: thankful in Kansas

You can get with the city, as the people from the show have to go through the city to get the building permits and things of that nature. But you have to be quick, because I didn't get my name in there right away, so I had to be standing on the sidelines cheering. Which that was ok, but I would have loved to have helped. Good luck with it.

the homes the show builds are around $150,000 or greater. how can the people who are getting these homes afford the taxes on them? That's what the show doesn't tell them.

Some things mama tells ya, just shouldn't be forgotten...."if you ain't nothin' nice to say, then don't say anything at all." God bless all the families that have been devistated by the storms of KS. More power to those who's intensions are to help and not hinder. If all I had to worry about was paying property taxes, I'd be real happy. Better than a 30 yr. mortgage and property tax. 15 yrs ago my husband & I loss everything is a house fire. We had an 11 mo. old daughter and another on the way. We lived in a small community that was very giving. If it wasn't for the kindness and giving hearts of those folks, I don't know what we would have ever done. Because of that....I tend to be real careful about judging those whto ask for help or those who give it. Ever been there? rebuilding your life is no walk in the park. And having folks willing to help you through it, is as far as I'm concerned, answered prayer. Even if it does cost ya some dough the price for caring is cheap.

Take a chill pill Mr Ed. You might not be saying that if they were building you a house. They are doing something REALLY nice for a family. And it has nothing to do with who's worthy of help. It's a show, not a lets save the world kind of thing. How about we just be thankful that some big hollywood production, thought of Ks, and is coming back to do something good for us?I hope they see how thankful we are to have their help.

I am so sick of the whinning over Extreme Makeover coming to town. The ones you don't here anything from. All are the true human beings that makes this America. Noone has said anything about the whole police department who lost their homes and the City Councilmen & women who also lost their homes and were displaced by the tragity that night. They all picked up and volunteered hours to Extreme Makeover and no whinning about this, that, and the other so my opinion is get your bottle and get over it.
Layoff noticed will go out to over 2000 employess this week at Cessna. I would like someone to answer to why after laying off 500 workers in November that Cessna paid quarterly bonuses to Managers and Senior leadership. Will they forgo the March bonuses to save jobs? Shouldn't they have done that first prior to laying off 500 workers.
To Janet, Alto NM, The nursing home located in the North part of Chapman KS was O.K. when I was there the day after they were running on generators, but most of the town not effected was still out of power.
What a wonderful show that is! Not only did they help the original family but they helped many in the community help themselves! It is a pleasure to watch how folks can come together in a time of need and reach out to those around them, even when they themselves need help. Not to sound corny but when Ty and his crew show up to a location it is as if an Angel has arrived and you know things will be alright! Thanks to all that helped in the effort and good luck to the rest of Chapman on your continuing rebuilding effort. I tear up each week while watching Extreme Makeover but this week was one of the most emotional yet! God Bless America!
I think that the show was great! The family very much deserved that home. The show brought me to tears. My husband is in the army and I know how hard it is for them to be deployed. The community came together to help one family and that is a community that I would want to live in. God Bless that family and the whole community. They very much deserved the makeover.
Amazing job Extreme Makeover! I just finished watching this episode and it brought tears to my eyes! I may not be from Kansas, but I do have friends with family in Kansas. To see how a the Chapman community all came together to help build not just one families home, but others as well is amazing. God Bless all of the families who were touched by Extreme Makeover and God Bless the men and women who helped make it possible.
Great work Extreme Makeover! My family was in tears for two hours watching this episode of the Home Edition. We were so thrilled that you were able to help our close friends Pat & Daina Irvine too. Pat & Diana are truly two very deserving residents of Chapman, Home of the Irish! God Bless to everyone that made this possible to those families that call their home town Chapman!
just watched extreme makeover.getover it..abc helped a lot of people that i could see..you are just jealose that they did't pick you,or one of your people. we live in the usa..we are to help each other. if i lived in ks. i would be their..
Just wondered what damage was incurred at the Nursing Home. My grandmother lived there a few years ago. Thanks!
All I beg of the citizens of Chapman is do the work yourself. I have seen my area go from a beautiful proud town to one of crime by allowing illegals to come in a work. Our schools, parks, etc are littered. Our children can no longer go out and play. Gang violence which was non existent is now rampant. We no longer have sense of community as it has been lost to a third world plunder.
The strength in Chapman is so incredibly strong and tears come to my eyes at the incredible love that radiates within the town. God bless you all for your courage and strength in teh toughest of times.
I hope people and rejoice of what the have and think about giving. I have give and give even though I have nothing and need repairs on my home to. but i will help when somebody is in need and hope in return I had a stroke bad car wreck and just recently lacerated spleen that is life threating and a husband in Iraq. But I will still do for others. God Bless
I would have to say... everyone here is complaining about oh the taxes are going to be soo high! Well if the family thinks about it... if they set so much money aside each month they won't have to worry about the taxes. Pretty much set the money aside like your paying your mortgage. Yea sure the taxes will be high at the end of the year but if they budget like 500$ a month thats 6000 set aside for their taxes for the end of the year. 500$ a month would be a lot less than what their mortgage would be. But then again some people are just more greatful then others and appreciates and accepts what they get. These people sitting here complaining about this family getting this home is just jealous. And probably has never had a life crisis and when they have they've had someone bail them out and never thought or realized someone did help them. God bless this family.
big jim way shame on the grandmother that little girl and here dad lost there house and all the thing they had in the tornado.
Why , why is there still all of this bickering after a week ? You people need to grow up . Why don't all of you instead of getting on here and dogging ABC or the Family who got the house go out and think of creative ideas to help folks of Chapman out ? No, none of you can do that but you sure can sit on the computer and hide behind a anonymous name and run your mouths . To the grandmother of the little girl that lost her mom shame on you . Plus you need to get spell check . Stop the bickering and remember we live in a country that provides us with the choice to do what we want . All of you had the right to send in a video to ABC and get your house of choice rebuilt , did any of you ? Evidently not . So stop acting like kids and stop hiding behind your computer . God bless ABC for there ability to do what they've done for your community .
