A Nickerson man led Reno County law officers on a high-speed chase right to the driveway of the county jail early Saturday.

The incident started at about 7:30 a.m. when a Nickerson Police Officer attempted to stop a Wisconsin licensed vehicle on a traffic stop. The vehicle fled from the officer and a chase ensued heading towards the city of Hutchinson.

The chase went directly to the Hutchinson / Reno County Law Enforcement Center, where 24 year-old John Oquenda proceeded down the entrance ramp which leads into the area of the Reno County Jail.

Oquenda reportedly stopped before hitting the closed overhead doors. Officers surrounded the top of the ramp, ordering the man from the vehicle, but Sheriff Randy Henderson says Oquenda put the vehicle into reverse and accelerated towards the officers at the top of the ramp. Officers, fearing for their own safety, began firing shots at the car. Henderson says Oquenda stopped just a few feet short of them and he was then forced out of the car.

Oquenda was arrested and charged with five counts of aggravated assault of a Law Enforcement Officer and Flee and Elude officers.

The KBI has been requested to investigate since officers from Nickerson PD, Hutchinson PD and the Reno County Sheriff's Office all were involved in the discharge of their weapons. Oquenda was not struck with any rounds, however the vehicle was struck numerous times.
