Just a few feet away from where Linda Smith's kids play, could be trouble. "If they see one they run so I think that's probably why they haven't got stung yet, they run too fast to get caught", said Smith.

Running may be one way to avoid bee and wasp stings. Here are some others:

  • Keep your kids away from garbage cans and gardens where flowers are in bloom.
  • Don't dress your kids in bright colored clothing. It attracts bees.
  • Perfumes, hair sprays and scented soaps also attract bees.

If you get stung, it's critical to remove the stinger quickly. Use the edge of a credit card or your thumbnail to pull it out. Be careful not to pinch the stinger. Also, soak a cloth in cold water and press it over the area of the sting to reduce pain and swelling.
