The butterfly house at Botanica is one of the garden's most popular attractions. Several different species of butterfly call it home from May through October.

Mary Brashear of Belle Plaine asks, "Now that the butterfly house at Botanica is closed for the season, what happens to all those butterflies? Are they let go to fend for themselves or does Botanica box them up and ship them to a warmer climate?" Good question.

The answer is: None of the above. Once the butterflies enter the house, they can't leave, according to a Department of Agriculture regulation. The butterflies are permitted to live out the rest of their lives in the peaceful confines of the house. Since most of the species in the house have a short adult live span, it doesn't take long before the house is empty.
