A Kansas man sentenced to life in prison for the 1999 slaying of his 14-year-old sister-in-law has been freed.

Federal judge Richard Rogers of Topeka ruled last month that Floyd Bledsoe was denied effective counsel when he was tried in the slaying of Zetta Arfmann near Oskaloosa.

Rogers cited a lack of physical evidence, prosecutors' misstatements of evidence and the failure of Bledsoe's attorney to challenge those inaccuracies.

The Paul E. Wilson Defender Project at the University of Kansas won Bledsoe's release. The group says the 32-year-old was released under a supervised bond and is living in Hutchinson.

The Kansas attorney general's office has appealed to the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver. An expedited hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 17.
