348 potential jurors have been summoned to complete an 18-page questionnaire in the process of selecting a 12-person jury in the capital murder trial of Justin Thurber.
The potential jurors will report to Baden Square on September 29th in two groups of 174 persons each. The first group is scheduled to arrive at 9:00 a.m. and the second group at 1:00 p.m. Both groups will have three to four hours to complete the screening process.
“We’re trying to inconvenience people as little as possible,” Leith said. “But, it’s going to take some time to get through the questions.”
After the questionnaire has been filled out, the potential juror will be given instructions to report to the Cowley County Courthouse on a specified date. Prosecutors and defense attorneys will then select jurors to participate in a voir dire, a question and answer process that takes place in the courtroom.
The selection process will begin October 6th and will continue until 12 jurors and 4 alternates are seated. The process should be complete by October 14, which is the day opening statements are scheduled.
Thurber is on trial for the murder and sexual assault of Jodi Sanderholm, who was a student at Cowley College when she was killed in January 2007.
