A 16-year-old cyclist was taken to the hospital after a van struck him and drove off early this morning in south Wichita.

It happened shortly after 7 a.m. in just north of the I-235 and Seneca interchange.

The Van was found in the South High School parking lot. Police found the 17-year-old driver of the van and are trying to recreate the accident.

The cyclist was taken to the hospital in serious condition with head injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

It's estimated the van was traveling at 40 mph at the time of the crash. Police said the bike rider was in the crosswalk but the red light for the crosswalk was on. Police said the driver of the van didn't see him and struck him.
