Investigators from the WPD are working with the bomb squad trying to sort out details of a bizarre event Sunday.
A call came into police just before 7:00 a.m. Sunday of a man who had been shot. When officers arrived on the scene of an apartment building in the 500 block of N. Emporia, they found a 62 year old male victim. While accessing the man's injuries, officials discovered he had not been shot, but had "severe trauma" to the left side of his head. The victim, whose name was not available, was taken to a Wichita hospital in critical condition and put on life machines.
Officers discovered a suspicious, unknown device lying next to the man, which led them to believe there may be explosives in the building.
The bomb squad was called out and nearby residents were evacuated. The bomb squad took a number of homemade devices found inside of the apartment, and gave police an "all clear" to go inside and begin their investigation.
Police do not suspect foul play. At this time, they say they think this is a very unfortunate accident.
