The 2008 MDA Telethon wrapped up Monday night at the KAKE studios.
And on this special night of raising money to find a cure for muscular dystrophy two local firefighters deliver a check just a day after being hit by a car on their way to the scene of a grass fire.
They carried in big red buckets brimming with donations collected by Sedgwick County firefighters for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
But their story that makes it all mean so much more.
Dave Thompson and Lieutenant Richard Janne were out collecting money in their firefighter boots on Saturday for the MDA Telethon when they were called out to a grassfire.
On their way a car cut them off and their squad truck rolled. They were trapped inside, upside down and feared for their lives.
"Well, you've always heard them say you're life flashes in front of you. It does. You see a lot of things real quick," said Lt. Janne.
"We went for a ride. I don't think Wild West could ever duplicate the ride," said Thompson.
Jokes aside, the memory of the accident is still very emotional.
"It is. We have family. I have young children at home. It was scary," says Thompson.
But even as crews cleaned up the wreck, and the two firefighters were in the emergency room, their main concern was to make sure the donations still in their truck were saved.
"The guys called back to the station and they found the boot and yes everything was under water. But they actually washed the money off in the sink," says Janne.
Not only the money survived the crash, these two escaped with only small scratches and some very sore muscles. And a big goal to make sure they completed their charitable task and delivered the final check to the telethon live on air.
"We're happy to be here I can't say that enough. We were just tickled pink. We said when we walked out of the hospital that we were going to carry the money in. That was the good part," says Janne.
In all Sedgwick County Firefighters raised more than $14,000. The MDA Telethon in Kansas raised a total of more than $400,000.
