Parts of Kansas are seeing an unexpected side effect of higher gas prices and a government glitch: official tags for motorcycles are running low.

The problem is bad enough that counties with plentiful plates are being asked to share with other counties.

Motorcycles get better gas mileage than cars and trucks. But when the state made its annual tag order, gas prices hadn't reached their current levels and officials didn't anticipate the resulting demand from motorists switching to more fuel-efficient transport.

Adding to the problem was a delay in the annual contract renewal with a Wichita company that makes the state's license plates.

But the problem may be short-lived. Division of Motor Vehicles administrator Bonnie Brown says new tags are on the way.
