Winfield High School received a bomb threat by telephone this morning
just before 10:00 a.m. Following school district procedures, students
at Winfield High School and Middle School were evacuated to Stewart
Fieldhouse on the Southwestern College Campus.

Under the direction of Winfield Police Department, the schools and
parking lots have been secured and a bomb search has been implemented.
A bomb-sniffing dog is en route from Topeka to perform the search
and is not expected to arrive until later this afternoon.

Once the dog arrives, the search will take about an hour and a half.

Superintendent Marvin Estes has decided to cancel classes for the
remainder of the day at Winfield High School and Middle School because
of the length of time required to secure the school.

Only Winfield High School and Middle Schools are being dismissed.
Classes will continue on the normal schedule for grades K-6.

Parents may pick students up at Stewart Fieldhouse. They may be asked
to provide identification to ensure student safety and accountability.
Busses have been dispatched to transport students who normally ride
the bus.

Students and staff will not be allowed into the parking lot to
retrieve their cars until the parking lot until 4:00 p.m. or until the
parking lot is determined to be safe.
