Eighty-six Kansas State University students are being told that papers with their names and Social Security numbers were stolen from a parked vehicle last week.

A university news release distributed Wednesday said a continuing education instructor classes reported the Aug. 15 theft from his car outside a Manhattan home. The university sent letters to the 86 students informing them of the theft.

Items taken included a backpack with a list of names and Social Security numbers of students who had taken the instructor's classes from fall 2007 through summer 2008 at the UFM Community Learning Center.

The theft was reported to the Riley County Police Department Aug. 16 and to school officials Aug. 18.

Police are investigating.
