A central Kansas man is sentenced to a year in prison on charges related to the embezzlement of $230,000 from the Topeka nonprofit he co-founded.

Michael W. Slayton of Tecumseh pleaded guilty in April to one count of tax evasion and one count of failing to pay employee withholding taxes to the Internal Revenue Service.

As part of the plea deal, seven counts stemming from money taken from Designs 4 Life were dropped.

During Tuesday's sentencing hearing, the court also ordered the 49-year-old Slayton to pay nearly $200,000 in restitution to the IRS.

Slayton co-founded and served as director of operations for the nonprofit corporation that helped families requiring in-home care providers for special needs individuals.

According to prosecutors, Slayton wrote 138 checks to himself from the nonprofit's checking account and altered business records to conceal his crimes.
