Identity theft is on the rise in Wichita. Police say it's getting so bad, they're averaging one arrest a day.

Police say thieves are stealing items like credit cards and checks from people's cars, and using them to steal people's identities.

Chris says her identity among other things, was stolen out of her van last Saturday.

Chris says, "It was really a lot of nerve, right outside our front door, in short time and we were up at that time too."

Police say they're trying to get a handle on these car thefts, but the problem is these burglars are on the move, going from hotel to hotel taking the goods with them.

Police Lieutenant Hans Asmussen searched one south Wichita hotel today, hoping to find stolen items that belong to Chris and many others. Unfortunately, nothing turned up.

Police say the only way they can get a handle on this fast-growing financial crime is for people to understand it's a preventable crime, and take action.

Police say don't keep your social security number or driver's license in your car. Keep your cell phone, wallet and other valuable items with you, as well.
