Area firefighters have responded to four serious building fires in Southern Kansas since early Sunday.
The first blaze happened in Wichita, in the 4200 block of South Hydraulic at the Falcon Pointe Apartments. That incident caused nearly $100,000 in damage and left about 50 people displaced for the remainder of the night . Nobody was seriously hurt.
It was a 2-alarm fire around 12:30 a.m. Crews arrived to the scene where there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of one of the complexes.
Captain Jim Heath says the second alarm was issued because of the potential of people trapped in the building. He said working smoke alarms allowed most of the residents to get out of the building before fire crews arrived.
The fire did extensive damage to one building, with several apartments receiving smoke and water damage - and two suffering fire damage. Heath says around 50 people were displaced, but the property manager tells KAKE News that all but one person has now been allowed to go back to their homes.
Investigators say the cause of the blaze was most likely a malfunction with an electrical outlet under a sink.
The fire department responded to a second fire at 4:10 a.m. when a person in the area of 16th and Ash called 911 and reported smoke coming from an apartment building.
Crews arrived on scene and quickly doused the fire. The blaze caused $81,000 in damage and fire investigators say arson is to blame. The building was vacant.
Two people were injured in Oxford Sunday afternoon when an air conditioner unit exploded at a mobile home at 316 E. Pine St. The unit then caught fire. One person was transported to an area hospital with potentially serious injuries.
And in Maize, Sedgwick County Firefighters dealt with a kitchen fire at Fieldstone Apartments at 5050 N. Maize Rd. Officials say some grease flared up and injured two people.
A 19 year-old female and a 24 year-old female were transported to a Wichita hospital with potentially serious injuries, but no serious damage was done to the property.
