A Kansas Republican and a Washington state Democrat team up to press the case for awarding a lucrative Air Force tanker contract to Boeing.

Congressman Todd Tiahrt represents the Wichita area, where Boeing has thousands of workers.

Tiahrt and Democratic Congressman Norm Dicks of Washington have written to President Bush, urging him to resist pressure from European leaders in awarding the $35 billion contract.

The Air Force initially awarded the contract jointly to Northrop Grumman and a European aircraft maker. Boeing protested, and the Pentagon reopened the bidding after mistakes were found in how the award was handled.

Tiahrt cites reports that European leaders have been lobbying Bush to grant the contract again to the Northrop-Airbus team.
