It's an honor to those Kansans who gave their lives for their country. A traveling tribute arrived in Kansas Wednesday for a special veterans reunion. It's here for a special veterans reunion. It's the Vietnam war memorial.
"Most of us have friends who are on that wall, knew people that were on that wall," explains Ben Mitchell, a Vietnam veteran.
For 21 years, these Vietnam veterans have gathered. They are thankful to be with those who made it home and remember those who didn't.
"I've seen a lot of healing in the 21 years we've been doing this and it just fills my heart when that happens," said Mitchell.
Many have traveled to Washington to visit fallen comrades forever remembered on the wall, but for those who've never had the chance, the wall is now coming to them.
The traveling tribute is a replica of the original wall and it is in El Dorado for this year's reunion. It's been 10 years since it last came through. For many it brings with it raw memories.
"I was on casualty notification duty when I was in the Air Force and we were the ones that notified people," says Lewie Cooper. "There are some names on that wall that I actually notified their families."
For others, it's the first time seeing the names of lost loved ones.
"You can't describe it." says another visitor, seeing his father-in-law's name for the first time. "There are just no words for it."
This year those who've served in Iraq and Afghanistan are also being remembered with a special memorial and service on Saturday. It's a weekend these veterans hope the community comes out to for a chance to honor those lost.
"It saddens me," says Mitchell. "Nobody likes war and nobody likes death, but I'm glad they are memorialized and that's the way I look at it."
