Kansas officials think it's unlikely any gambling
proposals will be debated this session. But Governor Sebelius is
hoping to legalize gambling at race tracks.
House Speaker Doug Mays said today Sebelius told him last week
she does not want to be the issue's main supporter.
Bills before the House would legalize slots and video gambling
at race tracks. The Kickapoo Tribe and Sac and Fox Nation have
drafted plans for a casino in Wyandotte County. The tribes are not
yet negotiating with the state.
Sebelius would like the Legislature to pass a bill allowing
people who live near race tracks to vote on the issue.
Mays says the measure is complicated -- and he'd be surprised if
the bills are even worked on this session.
