A family of 11 is lucky to be alive after they were involved in a highway accident early Friday morning when their Suburban collided with a pickup at the intersection of K-42 and 135th Street West.
The driver of the pickup truck was thrown and is in critical condition.
Rescue crews rushed the entire family in the Suburban to the emergency room. Miraculously, they only suffered minor injuries, thanks to car seats and seat belts.
Eight-year-old Aubrey Wohlgemuth, one of the Suburban's passengers, is resting in the pediatric unit at Wesley Medical Center with a scrape above her eye and some bruises on her stomach; signs of the accident she and her siblings lived through.
"I was sleeping and I heard my mom scream at my dad, 'Jason watch out!' and then he stepped on the brakes as fast as he could and it made me bonk my eye," Aubrey said.
The Wohglemuths have three biological children and six adoptive children. KAKE News featured them in a story last year.
The family was on their way home from a night at the drive-in when the accident happened. The driver of the pickup failed to yield and slammed into the Wohglemuth's Suburban.
Paramedics carefully lifted each child out of the car. All were safely buckled in, a testament to how well seat belts work.
