Uranium levels in Lakin's water supply are high. But if turnout for a recent city meeting is any indication, concern among residents about the uranium is low.
City Administrator Fred Jones said that 30 people attended a Tuesday meeting on how to deal with the excessive uranium. Long-term exposure to uranium has been linked to kidney damage and cancer.
Jones said he would have liked for more residents to be involved. The southwest Kansas town has about 2,000 residents.
Lakin is one of several Kansas communities with excessive uranium in the water supply.
The town has hired a firm to identify other sources of water for the city and ways to address the problem. The report is expected by the end of the summer.
