WICHITA, Kan. — Two boys are in police protective custody while officers investigate their injuries.

Around 4:30 p.m. on New Year's Day, a 12-year-old boy walked into the Walgreens store on Harry near Edgemoor in southeast Wichita. He told someone inside that he was afraid to go home.

Police were called and found bruising to the boy's legs, arms and right shoulder from being hit with a belt.

Officers took the boy to his nearby home, where they found his 13-year-old brother. That teen was suffering from a broken right elbow from falling off a trampoline the week before. He said his parents refused to take him to a doctor.

The parents weren't home, and officers took both boys into protective custody. About two hours later, the boys' parents called police wondering where they were.

An investigation is underway. No arrests have been made.
