One home is a total loss and another suffered damage in a double house fire earlier this evening in Derby.
The fires broke out shortly before 7 p.m. in the 600 block of South Woodlawn in Derby. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from one of the homes and went defensive soon after.
An elderly woman and her dog were inside when the fire started, but they made it out safely.
Firefighters eventually got the blaze under control, but not before the roof partially collapsed on one of the homes. That home is a total loss.
According to investigators, the fire started on the northeast corner of that home, then spread to a second.
The cause of the fires is still unknown, and a damage estimate is not yet available. Crews from Derby, Mulvane, Sedgwick County and McConnell Air Force Base responded to the fires.
