Stay up-to-date with KAKE News:

A man from New York whose best friend died in Iraq will honor the soldier and all other American soldiers killed in Iraq with a coast-to-coast memorial relay.

Jon Bellona said the relay will go from Fort Irwin, California to Arlington National Cemetery. He and his friends will be joined along the 13-state route by other runners and groups.

They will plant an American flag at each mile along the 4,113-mile route. Each flag will have a card and photo honoring the fallen soldiers.

The ``Run for the Fallen'' began today, Flag Day.

The flags will follow a chronological order starting on the West Coast. The flag for Bellona's friend, Michael Cleary, will be placed just outside Wichita, Kansas, on July 20th.
