Authorities have identified a southeast Kansas man who was killed in a shootout with a longtime friend at a rural home after a night of drinking.
The Butler County sheriff said Troy Taylor of Wichita was fatally shot shortly before midnight Monday. Taylor's friend of 30 years, Jeffrey Hallstead, was briefly jailed on suspicion of second-degree murder charges. He has since been released while authorities await autopsy results and has not been charged.
Authorities said Taylor and Hallstead spent the night drinking in Wichita and returned to Hallstead's home near Rosalia in rural Butler County.
Investigators said Taylor opened fire with a shotgun and Hallstead shot him with a handgun, then tried unsuccessfully to revive him.
