Emergency crews are assessing damage from apparent tornadoes in Central Kansas.

The National Weather Service said there are reports of major damage, including homes destroyed in the Dickinson County town of Chapman. In addition, the Weather Service is receiving reports of damage in Manhattan.

Kansas Adjutant General Spokesperson Sharon Watson said more than sixty homes were destroyed in Chapman, and 30 more suffered major damage. Watson said a tornado, estimated to be 1/2 mile wide, hit the Southwest side of Chapman and moved through the town.

Watson said at least three people in Chapman suffered critical injuries, where part of the roof of the high school gymnasium was torn off. All three of the town's schools suffered damage.

Dickinson County Emergency Services spokesman Brad Homman said
three other people were critically injured and taken to Geary Community Hospital in Junction City. Homman reported "dozens and dozens of" other people less seriously injured.

The Kansas Adjutant General's office said Chapman is asking for help from the state and surrounding counties. Chapman officials are asking for security, police, debris removal from the state and EMS help from surrounding counties.

A tornado shelter has been set up for Chapman victims at the Webster Conference Center in Abilene.

Dickinson County officials believe everyone has been accounted for. If you have questions about a loved one in the Chapman area, you can call 1-888-800-0417.

In Manhattan, there are reports of significant damage at Waters True Value Hardware on Westloop Place, and Little Apple Toyota.
Kansas State University reports damage to Ward Hall, where nuclear engineering classes are held, and Burt Hall. Also the wind erosion lab at Weber Hall was destroyed. Weber Hall suffered extensive damage. Residence Halls were not damaged. The KSU campus is closed. A shelter has been set up for Manhattan victims at Portoff Hall at Cico Park.

Kansas State University released this statement early Thursday;

"K-State police report downed power lines, downed trees and branches as well as flooding on campus.

Among buildings sustaining damage were Cardwell Hall, Ward Hall, Burt Hall and the engineering complex. The Wind Erosion Laboratory, which had been located near Weber Hall, was destroyed. Damage also was reported in several parking lots. The Sigma Alpha Epsilon house sustained extensive damage. All residents are safe.

Pat Bosco, associate vice president of institutional advancement and dean of student life, said campers staying in the residence halls are fine and the residence halls sustained no damage.

"Orientation and enrollment will go on as scheduled Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. in the K-State Student Union Courtyard," Bosco said. "Any modifications in the schedule will be announced at that time."

More information will be available in the morning, after personnel have had an opportunity to further assess the damage. "

Manhattan Broadcasting Company stations report the Miller Ranch and Eureka Drive areas were the hardest hit residential districts.

Two Sedgwick County EMS workers are on their way to assist in Manhattan.

Baseball sized hail was reported from Salina as a storm moved through around 9:00 p.m. KAKEland Storm Chaser Jared Cerullo reported a mobile home knocked off its foundation and tree damage on Water Well Road, about two miles east of I-135. There are also reports of four homes being damaged.

I have a picture of the Chapman tornado that I recv'd via e-mai right after it happened. It is exceptional. I would like to know who took it. Give me your e-mail address, please, and I'll send it to you.

Russell, you are correct. Bryce and I had been standing outside the vehicle for a few minutes watching this system. It suddenly dropped the tornado and we jumped in to get as close as we safely could and I forgot to click my seat belt. I am a faithful seat belt user, but I simply forgot in the heat of the moment. Thanks for reminding me so I'll hopefully not forget in the future. Jared Cerullo
