HOWEVER, I do believe she should have to pay some kind of consequence...such as a misdemeanor charge for falsifying a police report, or even worse then that. She needs to know what she did is wrong! She does have some type of mental issues, that do need to be looked at. To be able to "hurt" herself no matter how superficial, that needs to be looked at by a professional, I believe she needs some type of counseling. She needs to know why this was wrong, and why it is a big deal. It's not something that people are going to forget about anytime soon. But I do feel sorry for her and her family for all they go through. Teenage years are very hard years, I'm sure a lot of you guys posting on here can agree with me on that.....so while I agree what she did was wrong, and we all know she deserves some type of punishment, just remember that she needs support too!

The first interview on the tv showed the mother supposed to be distraut and crying. Yet she never once shed a tear. She just made noise and kept putting her hands over her face. I am a parent and I do believe my children but I also know when my children are lying. I would have drilled her the day she got home. Layla took so much time away from real investigations and this is why she should be punished. In my opinion, her parents jumped at the opportunity to do an interview so that is why they are being judged by the public. If you put your private lives on the news then you deserve what you get. They had a choice and they chose to air their ordeal. I do know my children would never do this and I do know what I would have done.

I am pretty sure her parents were torn up when they learned what she had done, and maybe just maybe they were able to pull themselves together when the confession came on the air. How did you expect them to act on national tv?? I in no way am defending the girl, and yes obviously she needs some counseling. Our first instinct is to believe our children, and be glad that the worst didn't happen, than just than we can tell when our children are being honest or not. You act like they knew she was lying the whole time. I NEVER said she shouldn't be punished for her actions. I believe she should be but don't believe the parents should be punished for something they did not do.

It disgusts me that you are speaking on behalf of law enforcement because something tells me that you are on the other side of the law yourself. It seems that you are the one who needs to visit an "institution" and possibly seek anger management. You seem like one of those sociopathic indiviuals that prides themselves on being a bully. You furthered this idea by posting on "spelling errors". Too bad we are not all as perfect and all-knowing as you.

We were all 14 once and I believe it's safe to say that even the best parents cannot control the lies that sometimes come out of the mouths of teenagers. They didn't seem that torn up on the news and when she confessed, Detmer said that her parents encouraged her to tell the truth. They must have known that she lied. Maybe they need family counseling. They need parenting classes so they can tell when their child is having a major crisis. Also where was she for the weekend?? Was she with an older boy?? She didn't look like she suffered at all. Also she needs to do a public apology to the hispanic community. She tareted them and that isn't right. I am a parent and my child would have to do this and would definately do public service even if the court didn't order it. They would also have other punishments!

She was wasting the police's time when they could have been helping find other children who were actually in serious trouble! It was something about her demeanor that gave it away. She didn't look like someone that was kept against her will. What I seen was a teenager scared Because the community went out the way to find her. So she had to think of something to tell the public, when she said she didn't know her kidnappers, I knew she had to see who put her in the car. Then she scared herself to make it look good. But I couldn't see how someone could just slice her like that and she didn't know she was cut. Now what I want to know is she going to get in trouble for her false statement? Knowing she seen the news those 4 days and let the community believe she was dead or something. She looked like a problem child. A child that wanted attention. We never got to know what really happen. R we going to hear what happen forreal? Thank You
- Posted By: Tracy: I am afaid this maybe a growing trend among teenage girls. This summer a neighborhood girl did the same thing only she was gone one night. She swore up and down two mexicans in a red truck took her. The sad thing was another neighbor of ours were mexican and owned a red truck. The police scared them to death. Thank God by the end of the night it was all straightened out. What worries me though, is that nothing happened to the girl. There was no kind of punnishment, and the parents ended up blaming the daughters boyfriend. I believe these girl need to be held accountable for their actions, and it needs to be very advertised. This way maybe it could stear other girls away from makin the same mistake.

I hope everything turns out well. I cant beleive she would do such things to her family or her self. I have stood up for her from the beginning and I still am. She may have made a mistake. The good thing is that she is safe. (If I'm assuming correctly the LEO means Law Enforcement Officer) I happen to know from experience you guys are pretty good at doing that without help from false reports. Anybody remember the spectacle about Brian Green and the Clusters? Lyons PD even admitted that they didn't use any extra resources or time on the case because they didn't take it seriously.

But finding out that she had lied about the whole thing doesn't make me feel any sorrow towards her. It's too simple. She lied, unfortanately her parents should have to pay the bill for the search since she is under 18. I don't want my tax dollars used to pay for this erronious adventure of her's. However,as such, they need to experience real and lasting consequences for the bad choices they make. Discipline with love. Boundaries that are clear and unchanging.A girl like this needs the support of her community as she suffers the consequences of her actions. I do believe she needs to experience the effects of her decision to break the law and lie to the police, her family and her community. I don't think she or her family need to be insulted. Let the letter of the law and those appointed and elected to uphold it take care of the matter.

The same thing happened in my family last year and what's sad, is the fact that these girls want to feel loved, and when someone shows them how to feel good and feel like they're wanted, they'll do almost anything to keep getting that feeling. I'm sad to say that when my family member went on her little trip, she was beaten severely, and raped, and is now pregnant. All because some guy showed interest in her. This girl would do well in a boot camp or a scared straight program, something to get the point across. There are so many reasons why what she did was wrong, but you gotta look at her side too. She needs to ask herself, was this guy worth it, to lose trust and innocence and friendships? She will never be looked at the same. So even though you might have a lot of words for her, remember, she will suffer too.

Maybe your school district or church has something available for you too. Often in situations like these people seem to forget the other family members involved and how it affects and changes your lives and relationships too. I know you don't know what to say to your sis, but try to look at things from her angle. She's probably just as embarrassed and now realizes the seriousness of her accusations. She probably needs some people around her who still love her. People her age sometimes don't have the maturity to think about the long time consequenses of their behavior. I had to learn from my family member's mistakes--it's hard being in their shadow for good or bad. Time heals all wounds. Keep your head held high and know that all of this is not a reflection of you or your family. I'm pulling for you girl!

- Posted By: Parent: Well I never believed her story. I think she should have to do several hours of dirty community service to repay her debt to our community. Are we really sure that her close friends, like the one she was supposed to spend the night with, didn't know where she was staying? They need to find out where she stayed and they should be charged with hindering with an investigation. They should have turned her in so she could be punished. Maybe she was with an older man and he will be in trouble for being with a minor under 16. Question this girl and make the story known to the people. I am not saying that the parents need to be punished but they need to pay the restitution with Layla. My child would wish that they could be taken away because they would be doing chores and be grounded from friends and other extras for a very very long time. Maybe she needs to work in an old folks home or hospital to clean up after the sick.

- Posted By: plo: and who was it that said they knew Layla and she was a good girl from a good family that wouldn't lie about such a thing, well obviously you don't know her to well, shame, shame, shame, and you wonder why people don't believe these stories anymore, and when it really does happen some child won't get the help they need...remember the boy that cried wolf, she needs counseling and perhaps she needs some consequences from this, perhaps when there are consequences from these bogus stories, kids might think twice about doing it. Start prosecuting the child and the mother and father and perhaps it will stop but let's just slap her on the wrist and say don't do it again honey. what a society we have become.

Well Monika, you asked for it and now you shall receive. You were duped. Defrauded. Conned. All so your sister could go out and party with some guys. If I was wrong about this I would gladly admit it. Do you have any idea how much an investigation costs? If the police had taken her seriously they would have released more details. Yes Layla needs help, however I can assure you that is it not psychological, it is institutional.
