Les Johnson was a typical 29-year-old man. He worked a construction job in Salina and rode his bike to work every day. However, on July 23, 2001, he never returned home. Four months of agony for Johnson's family turned to despair when hunters found his remains in a remote pasture southeast of Marquette in January of 2002.
"He was kind of a loner," said McPherson County Sheriff's Captain Doug Anderson. "He had some friends, but he never got into any scrapes that we're aware of."
On a cold January day in 2002, two deer hunters came across some bones in a remote pasture south of Rainbow Road near Marquette. Anderson says the hunters didn't report the finding until a few days later when they encountered a human skull.
"It's not uncommon to find bones in a field," Anderson said. "They just thought they were animal bones until they found the skull."
Another clue to the mystery, Anderson says, is Johnson's bicycle. It was found near a road about a mile west of where his body was dumped.
"Someone took him out there," Anderson said. "We don't know if he was still alive when he got to the field, but we don't think he went all that way from Salina on his bike and killed himself."
A farmer cutting hay also reported that he saw an out-of-place dark-colored pickup truck using the unmaintained, dead-end road a few days after Johnson's disappearance. However, he didn't report that to police until he saw media reports of Johnson's case four months later.
"Someone knows who did this," Anderson claims. "I'm positive of that. We just need to be pointed in the right direction."
