The rising cost of corn is about to hurt your wallet in an unexpected place: the movie theater.

Kansas City-based AMC Entertainment says that beginning today, ticket prices for weekend shows will increase one dollar to ten dollars for show times after 4 p.m. at its five area theaters. It also will increase the price of popcorn 25 cents nationwide.

One key reason is the recent jump in corn prices. Thanks to huge demand for corn as a biofuel source, the cost of corn has increased from two dollars to six dollars per barrel over the past three years.

A recent study shows that concession sales, including popcorn, allow theaters to keep the cost of movie tickets down by nearly 25 percent. That means if the cost of corn goes up, so could ticket prices.
