Home burglaries are up over 17% since this time last year and local police say thefts from garages are up 100%. For the most part, thieves aren't sneaking around breaking locks. They're preying on homes with open garage doors.

This month alone, police have more than twenty open garage theft reports. Four of those garages had cars stolen. The others had purses, keys, and other valuables taken.

Police say it doesn't matter the time of day, when an opportunity presents itself, a thief will strike.

These incidents are mostly occurring in neighborhoods on the far east and west sides of town, so KAKE News decided to check it out. One neighborhood which has been a constant target had more than 40 garage doors open without a resident in sight. For safety, we are not releasing where the neighborhood is located.

Some residents say they're not worried. Other residents aren't willing to take the risk and say they'll be keeping their door shut from now on.

If a few of these thieves would get shot a killed while breaking into houses, they my think twice. If you call the cops there is a 3% chance they will get caught and you will still never see any of your stuff again. If they do get caught we say poor criminals and they get probation again for the 12th time.

i guess we will just have to set priorities on what we want, if letting criminals out of prison to do it again and again isnt important, we will just have to do something else. has anyone checked into how much it costs for the state to contract all the prisons to private industry? is it cheaper to pay them a profit than to run them as state institutions?

At what point do you want to stop paying increased taxes to house all of these criminals Cliff? I say we buy an island in the middle of the ocean and dump all of them.

Whoever lives in the Cheryl's Hollow, I live here as well, if I see that van I will be sure to call the cops and tell them about past problems, next time call the cops when he is at your door.

This is why you need laws like we had back in Texas. I've lived here for two years, and I am constantly amazed at the laziness of the police department. Back home, in small town Texas, we could leave the house unlocked. We did leave the keys in the car. If someone boosted a car, they would usually get shot for it. If someone broke into a house, they would leave in a bag. Want people to stop stealing? Make it really not worth it. Like, high probability of death. You break into my car, into my house, violate my space, and take what I worked for.....I'll kill you, and not think twice about it.

If there were more arrests for burglaries, and convictions, but just alowing beatings for trafic offences isnt helping that. the state is the one that wants to lessen penalties, it seems they think the three strikes law is uneconomical, I think it should be mandatory.

Cliff, no wonder crime is rising. And to think some folks actually feel sorry for the criminals and get mad at those who would want to step up law enforcement and stiffen penalties.

some time ago, here were statistics released, of all burglaries reported, only 5% result in an arrest, only 5% of those ever go to court, only5% of those ever go to jail. seems like a very profitable field.

You should be able to leave your keys in your car and your house unlocked, but unfortunately that's not the world we live in today and there are pathetic people out there that look for opportunities like this all day long.

Walk into my garage and get caught stealing and that is the last thing you will ever steal

Today a man came to my door and rang the doorbell around 2 in the afternoon. I sent my husband to the door to answer and the man stated that he was delivering phone books, proceeded to hand two outdated phonebooks to my husband and then drove away without "delivering phone books" to any of our nieghbors, He was an older man about 5'10 to 6ft about mid 5o's. He drove a blue older ford or dodge van 88-95?. Hope he wasn't checkin out our house but I have my suspicions...
