A man and woman were trapped for five hours on the roof of a car by flood waters before rescuers could get them out by boat.
The water rescue Thursday in Crawford County was one of several reported because of heavy rains and flash flooding in southeast Kansas and in Jasper County across the Missouri line.
Sheriff's deputies said 21-year old Ryan O'Brien and 19-year old Albany Mattick called 911 around 2:30 a.m. to say they were trapped on the roof of their car after flood waters covered a country road.
The water was too fast for rescuers to wade to the car. The pair had to wait until daylight for firefighters to launch a boat and pull them from the trapped car. Authorities reported flood damage to 30 homes in the Webb City area of Jasper County, Missouri.
