The Pratt animal shelter, which took in hundreds of animals after the Greensburg tornado, is expanding.
A capital campaign and gifts from residents, including pennies from schoolchildren, has raised enough to pay for construction and some interior work on the shelter. Officials plan to expand the interior in phases as more donations come in.
Shelter officials knew before last year's tornado that they needed a new building. But they say the need became urgent after about 200 dogs, cats and a variety of other animals, including turtles, came in from Greensburg.
