Friends of a fallen Kansas soldier remember the hard work he put in to joining the army by inspiring others to get fit.
Sgt. Jamie Maugans of Derby died in Afghanistan on April 15, 2002. Maugans was the first Kansas soldier to die overseas in the War on Terror.
Maugans had joined the army four years earlier, but only after transforming himself. Before recruiters would allow Maugans to serve his country, he was forced to lose weight and improve his health.
"I was overseas at the time, and when I came back I didn't recognize him," says Capt. Matthew "Chief" Everhart.
Everhart and Maugans were best friends growing up. They both had dreams to serve together in the army, but Maugans weight and health held him back at first.
Everhart says he wants others to remember Maugans, and also inspire them to get fit. That's why he organized this years "Sgt. Maugans Memorial Ruck March." The word "ruck" refers to the rucksack many soldiers carry over their backs in battle. They're often heavy, weighing dozens of pounds. His slogan for the event: "Get the ruck out," implying individuals should lose weight.
More than 100 participants showed up for the event Saturday at Exploration Place. Many participated in a 4.5 mile walk. But others chose to go even further, joining Everhart for a 10 mile walk with various excersizes along the route.
Everhart now runs Blackhawk Fitness in Wichita. You can learn more about Blackhawk Fitness by clicking the link below.
